Sex, Drugs, and Youth Culture (CYWK 2009)

Students develop an understanding of how various social factors and social institutions influence and intersect with the identity formation and emergent behaviours of children and adolescents. Historical and contemporary youth culture and subcultures are studied, with a focus on the Canadian context. The transition from childhood to adolescence and to young adulthood is examined with a focus on emerging development which may include substance experimentation, use, and abuse, sexuality and sexual orientation, risky sexual behaviour and behaviour that is in conflict with the law. Students also consider strategies through which youth may minimize risk and build resilience.
