Professional Standards in Policing (POLC 4001)

The purpose of this course is to reinforce students’ use of professional standards in policing including conduct that advances the vision, mission, supporting values, goals and objectives of police organizations. The investigation of external public oversight bodies and internal police complaints systems within policing are closely examined including police disciplinary processes involving formal, informal and alternate dispute resolutions. In addition, students critically examine several aspects of provincial legislation, Human Rights legislation, Risk Management, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom, the Police Services Act and various police discipline cases in detail.
