Human Resources Management in Policing (POLC 4005)

This course is designed to examine the purposes and role of the human resource management function in policing organizations. Theoretical topics covered include management and leadership within organizational structures; performance management and competencies; planning, problem solving and decision making. In addition, students consider the historical perspectives and development of human resources management, the influence of government, staffing, employee relations, current issues and trends. Through critical analysis of policies and legislation pertaining to such topics as compensation, professional development and employment opportunities, labour relations, occupational health and safety and human resource planning, students expand their understanding of the skills and techniques necessary to perform the role of a HR position within the policing organization.
